This past Sunday, Amanda and I took a spin up to Royalston, Massachusetts. In the northern part of town, there is a Trustees Reservation called Royalston Falls, named for the spectacle that resides there. Believe it or not, there used to be a trolly that went from the greater Boston area out to the falls. The trolly system is not there anymore, however you can go on a wonderful hike down the Tully trail to visit the falls. From the parking lot off of route 32, you will venture down a gorge into a vast hemlock forest. Needles and moss cover the ground, making the not so obvious at points. Thankfully, there are numerous trail markers to lead you along. After twisting and turning around mossy rocks and hemlock trees, you will arrive at the falls. You will hear them before you see them. There are safety railings at the very top, offing great views of the falls and the steep sloping rock that form barriers in its wake. It is quite the site. If you are looking for some an adventurous day trip in state, I recommend exploring the Royalston Falls reservation.
